Frankey Barrz (Frank Barr) and Meggalooch (Megan Dunn) joined musical forces to create a new anthem for D.C. statehood—"Be Free." As residents of D.C., and advocates for equality on a broader scale, they set out to fan the fire for change in the Nation's Capitol, so that 700,000 U.S. citizens who pay federal taxes can have equal voting rights in the House of Representatives. As a hip-hop narrative, the song is inspired by the grit and social-consciousness of the genre. It includes elements of Go-Go—a D.C.-born, culturally rich genre currently involved in a larger conversation about gentrification via #DontMuteDC. "Be Free" emulates the power of art as a tool for justice—music fueling a movement.
